This woman lives in my building; she speaks no English, and she and her husband receive a monthly contribution from the government that pays for their rent. To supplement this income, they scour the garbage and recycling bins daily for the extra cash brought from recycling bottles buys them groceries and odds and ends.

These people, and persons like them, are not our choice neighbours nor are they the poster children the world displays on tourist advertisements.  However, they not only provide a service to the environment, they live and breath and multiply in the city almost forgotten.  They are not bad people, just people that fight to survive in the only way they know how, in a system they believed to provide them with a better hope for the future.
